Penang Story: Silversmith

Chinese woks

There in this town called Balik Pulau, a town on the northwestern coast of the Penang Island, I encountered this little shophouse where a silversmith make his arts and living. His art is not gorgeous painting that you can hang on the wall or precious jewelries that you kept in a treasure box for generation, but he can turn a piece of silver into tiny miniatures - Chinese wok, teapots, old-style-chinese thermos. Mr Fong, or better Sifu Fong is the man behind them.

The Silversmith

Polishing

He is a treasure in Penang an even well know internationally, being pick up by various publications, newspapers, travel magazine, or blogpost. He even got most of them framed and hang in his shop. A man not particularly humble, but proud of himself and kind enough to show me how his craft my name - the last chinese character of my first name: 宏 (read as hong in Mandarin or hiro in Japanese) out of a tiny piece of silver.

宏

Even a man with those pride, still, I can feel a glimpse of sadness and loneliness in his eyes. At the age of 60s, the delicate nature of the works require much more concentration and energy. When asked if he has any apprentice, he complained about how younger generations failed to pursue craftsmanship that requires years of training while he himself spent more than 10 years polished up the skills.

And fewer and fewer people cares and appreciates the arts. Even locals, often tried to bargains down the price while tourists are willing to travels miles, track him down in this little town and pay full for them.

I can't offer him a word but listened and document the man and his story quietly with my camera.

Tools

I glance back once crossed the street, the man sat back inside his counter staring at cars and motors passing emotionlessly at his shopfront. Not long, he pick up the tools, head down and went back to his tiny miniature's world.

Penang Story: Living Heritage

Ever since Georgetown gained the status of UNESCO world heritage site in 2008, it was rewarded a second life.  A city that on the edge of abandon regains its glory. Building was restored,  once emptied street was populated again with businesses, hostels, cafes, pubs and restaurants.

Although the townscape itself worth a lot of mentioned, it was the locals that caught my attention - locals who worth the title of "Living Heritage".  And they make a good material for photography too. Enjoy some random street photos!

Penang Story: Mobile Laksa & Popiah

Suddenly I have an idea - to start a small series dedicated to my lovely hometown - Penang.

As a follower of Eating Asia - A blog focus on culinary culture around Asia country. The author is an American now based in Malaysia. While running a project in Penang, she had plenty of articles about the island that make me a local, feel shy, about how little I know my own town.

So, by running this little series as a little self-project. I hope I can help capture the story of the city and to learn more about it every time I travel back for holiday.

Back to the story. A strange title, but this kind of business maybe vanish in near future. I never have the chance to experience it but back in old time, there were people travelling around neighborhood selling Wan Than Mee also known as Tok-tok Mee from the sound of knocking bamboo sticks made by the vendors to draw attention. Now, you hardly find anyone selling food on a motorcycle anymore, except the one selling bread, as my family always refer as Indian Roti because no other races running this business except Indian. The other will be this Laksa and Popiah also mostly run by Indian.

Was running out of luck that day. No more Laksa, the uncle told me. In the end, I help him finished up his last stock of Popiah and a bowl of Laksa's soup.

The taste is just normal, but what precious about this is the memory - in a lazy afternoon when you wonder what to get for afternoon tea, then you hear the familiar sound of the motor engine, you will know what will end up in the stomach.

Pit Fuh & Bee Gim Wedding

First, let's me congrats my big brother & sister in law again, happy marriage :-)

First wedding in the family, first time covering a whole wedding from day till night.

I read from a lot of wedding photographers, never shoot for family and friends. You will get yourself in trouble more than giving your best wedding present to them. I know before hand that, this is a tough job. I'm not just a photographer, but a close family member. I need to play 2 roles at once. Worst, I'm solo. My brother asked his friend to help out for the photo shooting too. But I totally dunno how should I coordinate the day because I really inexperience. I can only hope that if I missed some important moment, others can get it. At the end, I can only said that I'm no more than an uncle Bob.

I'm nervous. I'm afraid that I will mess things up. On the actual day, I clicked the shutter, I checked the LCD screen, over-exposed, under exposed, blurred images, bad compositions...all kind of situation came up. I kept remind myself, you don't need all shot to be perfect, you just need one. One that captured the moment.

2 days after the wedding day, then only I have the time to sit down and review the shots. I shoot in RAW, so basically every photos need some minor adjustments. Somehow every time I move the adjustment sliders, I felt myself cheating. Every time I cropped an image, I felt like I've done a poor job. I hate that feeling.

Taken another few days, off and on, finally I manage to pull up an album from thousands of images in my HD. I can't say that I have done a good job, just ok job, but I feel that this is the best present I can give to my brother and sister in law. Hope that they will like it ;)

Look back to these pictures. I think I've done a safe job, most of the important moments had been captured. I need more creativity. I need to take more risk. I need to see thing more differently. I need to communicate more. I need more....a lot to learn. Hope that I still have a chance to cover another wedding in the future.

For those who visit my blog, I need your critics to push me ahead. Please leave comments after the post! thanks.
